Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, March 9, 2018 — OE Solutions has been offering a large portfolio of Smart SFP solutions since 2012. Many customers, ranging from large network equipment manufacturers to small city carriers, use the Smart SFP to deploy new services on their network or to solve problems which could not be easily solved before.

One of the success stories of the Smart SFP is in Network Migration. Many operators have upgraded their network to offer flexible Ethernet and IP services to meet the ever-increasing demand for bandwidth. This upgrade poses a challenge for the continued offering of legacy services like T1 and T3 leased lines. A possible yet complex solution is to use circuit emulation cards to continue to offer these services on the newest generation of network equipment. A more attractive solution is to use Smart SFPs to offer legacy services such as T1, T3, OC-3, OC-12 or even OC-48, and carry those over an Ethernet service. Many operators now prefer this Smart SFP solution as it allows them to quickly enable legacy services on their packet platforms. In the future, when the legacy services are no longer required, the switch port can simply be turned into a regular Ethernet port by exchanging the Smart SFP by a regular transceiver, without the need to replace slide-in cards or perform complex configuration. Smart SFPs supporting more than half a million pseudowires have already been shipped and demand continues to grow.

Another application, which is demoed at the OE Solutions booth at the OFC, is encryption. Using in-house developed technology, it is possible to perform wire speed encryption inside a Smart SFP. This allows an Ethernet service to be upgraded to a secure, encrypted service, by simply inserting a Smart SFP on both ends of the link.

Thanks to the programmable nature of the Smart SFP and the wide range of available Smart SFP platforms it is likely that we can solve your problem using a Smart SFP. Come to our booth and discuss it with Jan Venema, CTO of AimValley, OE Solutions’ technology partner for the Smart SFP.

“Our innovative Smart SFPs are opening up new markets and applications. Our partnership with AimValley leverages our optical expertise and their network technology expertise to build unique products”, said Y.K. Park, CEO of OE Solutions.
